SYNTHETIC MAPS OF GENE DIVERSITY AND PROVENANCE PERFORMANCE FOR UTILIZATION AND CONSERVATION OF OAK RESOURCES IN EUROPE

DESCRIPTION OF LEAF MORPHOLOGY ANALYSIS

The morphological analysis was conducted on the set of 13 leaf morphological characters indicated in the protocol and in the following table. These characters were assessed on five leaves per tree in each intensively studied population (ISP).

Primary variables

Secondary variables

LL : Lamina length

PL : Petiole length

LW : Lobe width

SW : Sinus width

WP : Length of lamina from the lamina base to the widest part

NL : Number of lobes

NV : Number of intercalary veins

BS : Basal shape of lamina

HR : Abaxial lamina pubescence

OB : Lamina shape or obversity = LL/WP

PR : Petiole ratio = PL/(LL+PL)

LDR : Lobe depth ratio LW/(LW-SW)

PV : Percentage venation = NV*100/NL

A principal component analysis (PCA) based on the mean values of each tree for all 13 characters was conducted. PCA was computed on two different sets of data :

  1. all trees over all sites
  2. all trees within each site

The results are presented for each ISP with four different diagrams :

Graph of the two first components when the computation was done over all sites

Distribution of the first component when the computation was done over all sites

Graph of the two first components when the computation was done within a given site
